Kendari Day 2

January 11, 2019

I and my fellow SEA Teacher participants were picked up by Mrs. Uke at 9am. We were going to Halu Oleo University, Mrs. Uke toured us around their campus. After that we went to meet Mr.Asrun Lio, he is the head of the Department of Education and Culture in Kendari. They gave us this Jasmine Tea that was placed in like a juice box.

Together with the other participants and Mrs. Uke we rode the Tepe-tepe, the public transportation in Indonesia. We all ate at a small restaurant where I ate mie pangsit bakso. Bakso means meatballs. So it’s basically meatballs with noodles.

We then rode the tepe-tepe again and went to Tugu Religi Sultra where we ate Es Buah. A ride in a tepe tepe only costs 3k rupiah or 10 Philippine Pesos.

At 2pm we went back to Halu Oleo University where we met the Vice Dean of the Academic Affairs in University of Halu Oleo University. He was very generous and gave us a shirt, coat and cap of the University. During our tour in the different places there were also Indonesians who were asking for a picture with us. We felt like we were celebrities! It was a very tiring but fun day. I was quite happy when they told us we were going back to our dorm already.

At 5pm I felt hungry so I told my roommate Rose that we should already buy our food. Buying food was quite a challenge because we can only speak and understand a little Bahasa Indonesia while the Indonesians cannot understand and speak English that much. So with the use of Google translate we were able to communicate with them. They were laughing because we were all having a hard time to understand each other but it was a success. We also bought Indonesian street food, it costs 1k rupiah or 4 Philippine pesos. The vendors were really friendly so we asked if we could take a picture with them and they were really happy. After we ate, we accompanied our neighbor John, who was also a SEA Teacher participant to buy food. With the use of Google Translate, my friend was able to buy his dinner. Before we left the mini restaurant we took a picture with the Indonesian people who are working there. They also asked if they could take a picture with us. We passed by a mini grocery and I saw that they had an umbrella. I had to buy one because during the morning and afternoon, the sun is really high and it was so hot but as it was nearing evening the rain is always pouring hard. I was very happy because we were able to communicate with the one selling it using gestures and simple Indonesian and English language.
